So one of the things that American Psycho – the book, not the movie – does to illustrate its narrator’s shallow materialism is devoting a lot of word count to describing characters’ outfits, except the resulting descriptions are just random mishmashes of high-class brands that any reader who’s familiar with them would recognise as something that would look clownish and absurd if you actually wore all that.
I was thinking about that, and then it occurred to me: you know what other well known work of fiction also does that?
In ‘06 My Chem released this, The Black Parade, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is “Welcome to the Black Parade,” a song so catchy, most people probably don’t listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it’s not just about the pleasures of nonconformity and the importance of trends. It’s also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey, preps!

The opening monologue from American Psycho:
I live in the American Gardens Building on West 81st Street on the 11th floor. My name is Patrick Bateman. I’m 27 years old. I believe in taking care of myself, and a balanced diet and a rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I’ll put on an ice pack while doing my stomach crunches. I can do a thousand now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial masque which I leave on for ten minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion. There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman. Some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me. Only an entity. Something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours, and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable, I simply am not there.

Hi my name is Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way and I have long ebony black hair (that’s how I got my name) with purple streaks and red tips that reaches my mid-back and icy blue eyes like limpid tears and a lot of people tell me I look like Amy Lee (AN: if u don’t know who she is get da hell out of here!). I’m not related to Gerard Way but I wish I was because he’s a major fucking hottie. I’m a vampire but my teeth are straight and white. I have pale white skin. I’m also a witch, and I go to a magic school called Hogwarts in England where I’m in the seventh year (I’m seventeen). I’m a goth (in case you couldn’t tell) and I wear mostly black. I love Hot Topic and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a black corset with matching lace around it and a black leather miniskirt, pink fishnets and black combat boots. I was wearing black lipstick, white foundation, black eyeliner and red eye shadow. I was walking outside Hogwarts. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. A lot of preps stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them.
These are the same speech for two different target audiences.
Nothing fills me with rage quite like seeing “no overnight visitors” on an apartment advertisement, like, who the fuck do these random landlords think they are, to deny someone the ability to host a friend or a sibling for the night, to even feel comfortable dictating the terms of a paying tenant’s sex life, like seriously fuck off all the way to hell
hex your shitty landlord and watch their life crumble into pieces
There’s a very effective hex called a “tenant’s union” and you can learn the sinister rituals through covens dedicated to the craft. <|:)

One of the hardest parts of being bipolar is just feeling like there’s no way out. That the moment you start to get a grasp on your situation or your struggle it feels like you’re trying to grasp grains of sand as they slip through your fingers. That you’re damned to a future where your only outcome is hating yourself and feeling miserable or losing your grip on reality and losing those you love. That those fleeting moments of mania are the only times you actually like yourself and that managing your illness and using your support network/meds/other means of mitigating your mood swings leads to a future where you aren’t allowed to be happy. That every time you feel good and feel confident or productive someone is going to second-guess you. That you don’t even know where happiness begins and where the mania ends. How you think about killing yourself at least once a day because you can’t see any light at the end of this tunnel. How every night when you go to bed you’re terrified of what the next day might bring.
Don’t get me wrong I’m in a much better place than I was last year and I’m leagues above where I was Summer of 2019. But it’s still a fucking slog and it’s fucking exhausting. And sometimes your feet are bleeding and all you want to do is pull off this highway, lay down, quit and die. But you keep moving and putting one foot in front of the other. I get that life isn’t fair it’s just…exhausting living like this. Idk. Just needed to get that out.

X-Men sketches, Part Two! Initial sketches lead to some more character specific studies where I’m trying to practice some poses and perspectives while playing around with some different styles. The great thing about X-Men is that you get almost sixty years of alternative styles and color schemes to explore. I’ve got one more character from this series that I’ll be posting some progress pics of tho I’ll prob post updates on these as they go from pencils to inking and colors.
First post!! Some first round rough X-Men sketches. This lead to a bit of a series of X-Men sketches so expect to see some more mutants soon (including some WIP shots to show my “process”).
